Criminal Defense Lawyers for Juveniles in Denver: What is Juvenile Detention in Colorado?

After a juvenile is arrested in Denver or Aurora, Colorado, he or she will be assessed or screened to determine the best course of action for him or her. If community supervision seems appropriate for your child, your child will be monitored by non-secure, community-based services. But, if your juvenile requires secured detention, your child will typically be detained or held in a youth detention center either because they are awaiting a court hearing or they are serving detention ordered by the court for up to 45 days. Our juvenile attorneys are prepared to have a meeting with your child in custody at these Colorado juvenile detention centers.

Our lawyers have the ability to schedule visits at Colorado detention centers to speak with your child and ensure their rights are protected.

Teen Detention Facilities in Colorado: Juvenile Commitment Assessments

If your child is adjudicated delinquent in Colorado, the Division of Youth Corrections will assess all youth within 30 days of their commitment. The assessments will take place at either the Front Range Assessment Center in Denver or the Western Region Assessment in Grand Junction.

Some assessments our juvenile lawyers have seen include:

  • Mental Health Assessment
  • Criminogenic Risk and Needs Assessment
  • Drug and Alcohol Screening and Assessment
  • Vocational / Education Assessment
  • Medical Assessment
  • Neuropsychological Screening

After the assessment is complete, your juvenile will meet with a multi-disciplinary team. They will talk about their needs and their family needs, future transition plans and placement type (learn more about placement types). Your child may then be placed in a state operated treatment program or facility. Some of these are listed below. Colorado law also requires that all committed juveniles serve six months of mandatory parole after leaving the Division of Youth Corrections.
